COULD é um modal verb, ou seja, auxilia o verbo principal da frase. COULD é o passado do "can".

Pode ser usado nas seguintes situações:

1. Expressar capacidade ou habilidade no passado

- We could understand everything he said. - Mary couldn’t come to the party last night.

- I could ride a bike when I was 4 years old.

2. Para pedir permissão ou fazer um pedido (de maneira mais educada que o can.)

- Could I use your phone, please?

- Could you close the window, please?

- Could you do me a favor?

3. Para sugerir algo

- We could go to the beach tomorrow.

- You could stay here tonight.

- You could come with us.

4. Para falar sobre uma possibilidade remota - It could rain today.

- In a situation like this, anything could happen.

✅ Estrutura frases afirmativas:

SUJEITO + COULD + VERBO + COMPLEMENTO.

Ex.: She could go to the party with us.

❌ Estrutura frases negativas:

SUJEITO + COULD NOT + VERBO + COMPLEMENTO.

Ex.: She could not go to the party with us.

OU: She couldn't go to the party with us.

COULDN'T é a forma contraída de could not.

❓ Estrutura frases interrogativas:

COULD + SUJEITO + VERBO + COMPLEMENTO + ?

Ex.: Could she go to the party with us?

* Observação: O verbo seguido do "COULD" não será conjugado, nem entrará o "to", ou seja, ele fica igual para todas as pessoas e pronomes.
